Exploring atmospheric interiors with a sense of the gothic and preternatural, Sanctum features stunning photography that brings to life the captivating aesthetic of the uncanny. Photographed by Mark C. O’Flaherty, the book explores homes that seem to predate their current inhabitants and will endure long after they are gone. Rich in intriguing textures, layered histories and unexpected details, these interiors have been transformed and reinterpreted by those who inhabit them today. Objects carry dramatic narratives, their unexpected juxtapositions creating fascinating visual conversations. Some homes serve as living museums and creative studios, where history and contemporary artistic expression coexist. Through remarkable photography, Sanctum reveals that the uncanny is something to be cultivated rather than purchased, showcasing authentic, uncontrived spaces that display a confidence rarely seen in contemporary interior design.

Drawing inspiration from In Praise of Shadows, the influential essay by Japanese novelist Jun'ichirō Tanizaki, Sanctum celebrates the beauty found in imperfection, age and the passage of time. Where modern elements appear, they are grounded by objects rich in provenance, from memento mori and esoteric architectural salvage to antique children's toys and pieces originating from theatre and fashion productions. Featuring the homes of agnès b., Simon Costin, Phillip Lim, Pol Theis and others, this beautifully photographed book captures the dilapidated grandeur of urban exploration, the bohemian spirit of eccentric collectors and an enduring fascination with all things gothic, mysterious and esoteric.
