The Unikko pattern was born in 1964 after Marimekko founder Armi Ratia publicly declared that no floral fabrics would be designed at the company. In defiance of this rule, Maija Isola created a bold collection of floral designs, including Unikko - meaning "poppy" in Finnish. Today, it remains one of Marimekko’s most iconic and globally recognised patterns.
